Home Additions You Need a Permit for before Building

Team Front Range

Building permits are authorizations you must get in writing from local authorities, before starting a construction or remodeling project. Although not all types of projects require authorization, most of them do, so make sure you do not ignore getting the permits, to be able to prove the safety of the work and also its compliance with zoning codes. If you do not get the necessary permits, you risk going through legal issues.

The construction projects that always require permits are those that include works for changing the use or the structure of a building, as well as those that may create unsafe working conditions. So, you will have to get written authorization for:

·        demolishing a part of your house

·        adding/ removing walls

·        changing the use of a room (such as by converting a basement/ a garage to a living room)

·        changing the piping/ electric system (these may also require special system permits)

·        re-roofing etc.

On the other hand, here are a few examples of building projects that do not usually require a permit:

·        installing floor coverings

·        repaving your driveway

·        installing a small fence.

To get your building permit, you will have to complete an application, prepare a site plan, schedule an appointment for getting your plan approved and obtain final city approval.
